Ozona, Florida is right on the Gulf side of central Florida, just west of Palm Harbor and not far from Clearwater in Pinellas County. With many surrounding communities, it has the privilege of being part of a growing larger community with many of the extra features nearby that make a community feel like a home.

Ozona, Florida remains a quiet and small town with an “Old Florida Feel” of about 1100 people, but enjoys the benefits of major highways and two international airports nearby - the Tampa International Airport and the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport. From Ozona, you could be in downtown Tampa within 35 minutes giving you access to all the shops, jobs, sightseeing, and other things that a larger city

affords. There are plenty of schools to choose from, too - both public and private. Colleges are readily available in the Pinellas County area.

On this overcast day we decided to explore other areas of Orlando in more detail. About 10 minutes north of downtown Orlando is Loch Haven Park, an area that holds a number of major attractions, including theOrlando Museum of Art, the Mennello Museum of American Art as well as the Orlando Repertory Theatre, the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orlando Science Center.

We started our exploration off with a trip to the Leu Botanical Gardens. The centerpiece of the gardens is the Leu House Museum, a restored farmhouse dating back to 1888. It is located on Lake Rowena, one of the hundreds of lakes in Orlando, and surrounded by a 50 acre garden of roses, palms and

camellias. The complex also features an orchid house with one of the best collections of orchids in the United States. The Leu Botanical Gardens also offer a new tropical stream garden, a kitchen garden complete with herbs and vegetables and a butterfly garden.

Many of us discover Florida upon retirement, as we set out in our Lincolns and head towards the Atlantic Ocean. The first discovery of Florida, however, was not as simple. It involved more work, more tribulation, and less convenience: the first road to Florida had no IHOPs. Instead, it contained a man, a mission, and a ship.

The Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de leon is generally credited with being the man who discovered Florida. After taking part in the war to conquer Granada, he joined Christopher Columbus on his second trip to the New World. Once on this voyage, he got wind of the wealth saturating present-day Puerto Rico and sought permission to go there. Christopher Columbus, who

had retained military governorship of all his discoveries, died in 1506, paving the way for Ponce de leon’s campaign. By 1508 Ponce de leon founded the first settlement in Puerto Rico; by 1509 he was named governor.
