The Golfing Greats - Arnold Palmer
Arnold Palmer, General of Arnie’s Army, was speaking of golf, but he could have been describing his own life when he said, “Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character.” His sense of fairness, kindness toward everyone, and dry sense of humor have made him one of the most popular golfers to ever play the game. And he was pretty darned good at the game, too!
As a world-famous golfer, Arnold Palmer won a majority of his 92 championships on the U.S. PGA tour. The only “major” he never won was the PGA Championship, although he finished second in three of them. Probably most noted for being the first

But Palmer never let all that prestige and status go to his head. He unfailingly maintained a dry and subtle sense of humor. After succumbing to bad luck on the 18th hole at the Rancho Park L.A. Open in 1961, a newsman asked how he had managed to make 12 on the par 5 hole. His reply: “I missed my putt for an 11.”

The honor and unceasing dedication those fans offer Palmer is well-warranted. His philanthropic efforts, while never highly publicized, have earned him recognition with those who count the people who know him. Arnold Palmer is truly one of the greats in the game of golf. His run through the early 1960’s was really sensational with five of his seven major victories coming in between 1960 and 1962. While he ended up with seven major titles he finished second in as many as 10 majors. None more painful than the 1966 U.S. Open where he had a six stroke lead going into the final nine holes and he ended up losing in a playoff to Billy Casper. If he had managed to convert a few of those second place finishes into a victory he could surely have gone down in the history of the game as the greatest ever golfer.
Arnie’s greatest trait that endeared him to the fans was probably his typical dry humour. It never shone through more than in 1961 in the L.A. Open at the Rancho Park golf course. At the final hole where a par on the final par 5 hole a par would have given him a neat round of 68 he went on to notch a 12 on that hole. When asked how he managed to score a 12 on the par 5 his reply was “ I missed the putt for 11” !!
No wonder then that this great man has had such a great following which manifested itself in the form of “Arnie’s Army”.
