The Maldives - A Potted Summary
The Maldives are officially called the Republic of Maldives, a 26 atoll nation with a capital called Male. An atoll is a massive coral growth on a submerged mountain range or volcano. Atolls typically contain low islands encircling a seawater lagoon.
The Maldives went through a stream of conquerors including the Portugese, Dutch, and British. The islands garnered independence from imperialist Britain in 1965. In 1968, there was an ascendency of the Republic, and only two presidents have since reigned in political power.
